T - Shirt of the week

The weather is getting hotter every day. It's time to strip off your heavy outer layers and let those tee's fly. You want to make sure that you have plenty of choices when picking out what to wear every day. So we bring you yet another shirt to add to your wardrobe.

This tee is brought to you by Between the Buried and Me, a hardcore metal band from North Carolina. Now, we are not quite sure what is being depicted, but the t-shirt really stood out. It looks like some sort of under water scene that includes a skull from some animal, devils, horses, some people and a mermaid. Yea, it's like that. None the less, this shirt is killer. There are rays of colors shooting throughout the background. The band's name looks like it was written with fresh ink.

Guaranteed head turner for only $13. Get it HERE.

Push Play Doing All the Right Stuff

As Bamboozle comes around the corner, everybody should get ready to make decisions on what stages to go to and what bands to see. You're going to recognize a lot of bands, including No Doubt, Fall Out Boy, Third Eye Blind, and so many more.

You should go and check out Long Island's very own Push Play. At the Kazoozle stage. At 1:30 in the afternoon, Saturday. And then again on Sunday, at 5:10. They will also be playing the HoodWink Festival, performing the music of MUSE. This is a band that has been working their way to the top, headlining tours, signing with Jason Morey (Miley Cirus's manager), being in print publications such as Newsday, the New York Times, Popstar, M*Teen...just to name a few. They have what it takes to really break out on the main scene.

They are also a charitable band. As part of their continuing Push Play for Purpose effort, they have made tens of thousands of dollars in donations to charitable organizations. The members of Push Play spend time giving out sweatshirts to the homeless in Manhattan. They are just good kids rocking out.

Here's their website

Crazines at the Donkey

About two weeks ago Uncharted Waves was lucky to have Shane Told, lead singer of Silverstein, call into the station for an interview to talk about their album release tour. "A Shipwreck in the Sand" debuted back in March, and the band's fans are loving it.

This past Thursday Silverstein's tour hit New York at the Crazy Donkey, and it was wild. The place had so many people in it that my body temperature raised 10 degrees when we stepped in. The lineup included Norma Jean, Bless The Fall, Before Their Eyes and of course Silverstein.

This show proved that the hardcore scene is not dead, and it is actually thriving right here on LI. It was by far the most people I have seen in the Donkey since Adler's Appetite. Everybody was moving and the mosh pit took up almost the entire center floor. It was crazy watching bodies flying into the air and fists pumping with every beat, you could really feel the energy of the bands music filling into the crowd. When Silverstein played there new single "Vices" the whole floor moved in completely unpredictable patterns, everybody was just running around and getting absolutely wild!

This is still pretty early in Silverstein's tour, but from Shane's lips to the fan's ears, it was one of the most energetic shows so far
. The quality of the music was amazing, you could really pick out each instrument if you listened close enough. And the light show was really impressive too, I have never seen them look so good at the Donkey, and we've seen quite a few shows there. Just goes to show that the more money the ticket is, the more professional the shows get. Usually they are pretty good, but almost monotonous at times, but these lights always felt fresh.

For upcoming dates on Silverstein's "Shipwreck in the Sand" tour go HERE. This is an huge tour, so check out if they are coming to your town, this is a show you don't want to miss.

Thank YOU Long Island for keeping the scene alive! Keep coming out!

Power Outage

The power at the station blows out 30 min into Jess's first show that she is doing solo. Everything was going fine and dandy....until she's sitting there in the dark studio running on back up power that runs out in like 2 min.

Da F*@K?! Maybe it's time to have solar power so we never run out. Ahhhhhh now that's a good way to go green eh?

Anyways, we want to thank PIERCING SILENCE for coming out today. These guys are awesome, and we will have them on the show on a future date.

So we'll be back next week, and joining us in the studios is Petrel!!!

T Shirt of the Week

We missed last week, and we are sorry the post didn't make it up. If you buy this shirt you are helping the environment! Check out the pick HERE.

But this week we are good! For this week's shirt we choose from My Getaway. The shirt is called "Crank It" and it sports an old school boom box. I can't say I remember people walking around with these on their shoulder's, but the nostalgic feeling of seeing one is always welcome. With it's bold black design on the white tee, you can wear this shirt with pretty much anything.

But it HERE

Listen to MY GETAWAY <----- there

Happy Cranking!

Screw You Fat Cat

Back in December I was drinking at Mr. Beery's enjoying some live Friday night music and talking to a fellow by the name of Brett. We got into talking about how the music industry is constantly changing and how slowly main stream record labels are not signing as many people and are slowly crashing.

I thought about it for a while. People are not really going out and buying CDs or records anymore. Thousands of stores have closed down across the country. Thanks to the Internet we can now stream or download pretty much anything we want. This has led to the explosion of indie record labels and the smaller trend of bands starting their own record labels. Bands like Earth Eatz Dog have thrown away the idea of slaving for a big corporation. Micky James even opened his own studio right here on LI called Freedom Of Speech Records.

Now you have a band breaking away from the record label to do their own thing, and are very successful at doing so. MAE (multi-sensory aesthetic experience) has begun their own journey at the start of this year. Founded in 2001, MAE has released 3 studio albums, been on multiple tours, and is now working on their fourth album, one step at a time.

Every month of 2009 they are releasing a new song. In order to get this song, you need to go to their website and pay 1$ to download. Now, this dollar does not go to the members of MAE. Instead they are using proceeds towards Habitat for Humanity.

Here's a list of songs they've come out with so far 2009:

January 2009: The House that Fire Built
February 2009: Boomerang
March 2009: A Melody, The Memory
April 2009: Night/Day

So not only is MAE not under the constrictions of a label anymore, but they are giving the money they make to charity to help make these hard times a little better for other people.

So screw you fat cat! Indie is for the people!

Crazy Donkey is for Someone who is in Trouble...

I was not sure of what to expect from this night. There was a nice mix of genres at the Donkey this past Thursday, and let me tell you, it meshed together quite nicely.

The lineup was Barnaby Jones(punk/hardcore), Vision Through Sound(experimental indie), Hazmat Bay (reggae), Whack (instrumental polka ska), and The World Inferno Friendship Society (ska?).

The place was pretty full for a weekday night, the number of tickets sold were over 200. Most of the people there were kids, and they only had one bar open in the back due to this. Being an all ages show does not take away from the energy in the room at all though, and on this night the place was moving with bodies.

We came in at the end of Vision Through Sound's set, and you should totally check them out, their cd is amazing. Next up was our friends, Hazmat Bay. They totally killed the crowd. Everyone was grooving to the guitar solos and the feeling of reggae was in the air. I got lucky enough to be invited on stage to take pictures, and they came out great.

Whack, kinda stood there. It was interesting seeing an accordion on stage, and when the lead singer got in front of the microphone to "sing" it was really captivating. But other than that, it sounded like a lot of noise. I totally was bobbing my head to the beat, just not totally feeling the ensemble. Check them out, very skankable music.

NEW EDIT
Due to comments on this blog, I've decided to go into more detail of why Whack didn't float my boat. For one thing, I couldn't hear any of the breakdowns. It sounded like a high school music class when everyone is first trying to learn a song. Granted Whack has been around for a little, and they have recordings and a following. However, Linkin Park also has hundreds of thousands of fans, and they still kinda suck live. But I'd rather have seen them because they have stage presense, and Whack did not. After the show I listened to the Whack recordings and at least these I can enjoy what they sound like. They play music that can rile up a lot of different emotions, although I wish they had better recording quality. Once they can get into a professional studio and really put their music together they have some really marketable music. HOWEVER, bringing that studio sound to a live show is difficult, because the fact is you record each instrument seperatly. If you can't come on stage and play in sync, you sound like NOISE with a beat thanks to drums and bass.
/END EDIT

The World Inferno Friendship Society was pretty cool too. I did not know what kind of music they played, and I still can't really put my finger on it. Mostly ska, but there were heavy rock undertones and even some cabaret in there. The crowd ate them up. They knew all the words, the pit was HUGE, people were flinging themselves into the air off of chairs, it got crazy when they hit the stage.

Yet another great show at the Donkey. Check out the PICTURES.

Going Green and Making a Difference

I have always been a fan of companies that promote social action, environmental changes, anything that makes the world a better place. Recently (thanks to twitter) I came across an indie label that is doing just that.

Branch Records is an independent record company based out of Panama City, Florida. Not only do they provide the world with some very talented indie artists (American Fiction, The Carolina's, Eutopian Accident, just to name a few) they also teamed up with Sustainable Harvest International to help bring more green to our beautiful planet.

Trees are very important to our home. They remove CO2 from our atmosphere reducing the impact of the greenhouse affect. Branch Records removes 6 pounds of CO2 every year with every album sold. This is just one fact that Branch Records puts out. They do everything green, from planting trees to keping their studios as eco friendly as they get, Branch Records is making the world a better place.

So go check out Branch Records home page and myspace and listen to the music, support the cause and you too can make our home greener and help out future generations.

Today's show was a lot of fun, but it was also a sad one. With the news that both The Mercurial and Alaska and Me have broken up, two of our favorite bands leave the scene to go and do their own personal things.

Regardless, today's show was great! We played tons of new music, moment of zen, concert calendar, and t shirt of the week, solid.

Ninja Shirt!

The week's t shirt of the week caught our eye at the Crazy Donkey Thursday night. Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer! Just the name of the band is intriguing, we didn't know what to expect when they hit the stage. I'll tell ya, they don't sound like ninja's. But you will look very cool and stylish rocking out with this shirt. People will wonder, who is this Zolof character? You will respond, not this ninja, not at all.

This tee is 14 smackers. Check out their other stuff too, some really cool designs.

Farewell at The Crazy Donkey

The Crazy Donkey was a lot of fun as always, but this time it did have a small sense of despair. This was to be The Mercurial's last show due to complications in the band, they never really gave a reason. However, it is what it is and we loved them while they were together making that really awesome sound.

First up at the Donkey was Beyond All Eyes, followed by Set in Color. The Mercurial came up next and it was a lacking performance. However, being that the Mercurial has a large dedicated following, the show was still exciting. Chris and the rest of the band put on an awesome performance. Tonight was their last show together as we know them, and they went out with a bang! When they invited all of their fans to join them on stage for their last song, everyone took advantage of the opportunity, the stage was packed!

It was an all age show, but after the Mercurial got off stage only about 20 people remained up at the stage, most under 18. The rest were at the bar enjoying the rest of the music and a few drinks. There was Zolof, the Rock and Roll Destroyer and The Pink Spiders. Zolof was ok, you can check them out and see if you like them, and of course check out The Pink Spiders. Their sound was unique and their attitudes on stage were really cool, definitely worth the headline title.

It was a good night, can't wait to see where the players of the Mercurial end up, but we will be sure to follow them.

The last picture shown is symbolic of The Mercurial's farewell. Lead singer Chris Sanchez exchanging his microphone for a camera...the lime light for the memories. You will be missed.
