GrubLife Metro Launch Party

Last night was the GrubLife Metro launch party, hosted over at Social Sports Kitchen in Uniondale. It was a night for people from all walks of life and business on Long Island to come and mingle about great deals.

And that's only kind of a joke. Sticking with the GrubLife theme, everything at the bar was 50% off. There was also a complimentary buffet serving salad, rolls, penne alla vodka, roasted potatoes and lemon chicken. It didn't last very long, so I ended up ordering some sliders. They were really good! After all, Top Chef Danny Gagnon (the executive chef there!) prepared them.

There was always music being played, either by a DJ or by a lounge singer playing the piano in the middle of the venue. Verizon Fios came down as well to take video and interviews at the event for their news programming.

Social Sports Kitchen is a nice place, large with a lot of flat screens so you can watch your favorite sports from anywhere in bar. There is also a whole downstairs where another party was happening at the same time. I didn't have a chance to check it out, but I heard it's the same size as the upstairs, sized to fit 200 easily, I'd say.

I had the chance to meet several awesome people, including the wrestler Brimstone! Keep an eye out for deals on GrubLife Metro. Sign up today! It's your home for Long Island savings.

Help Local Business by Helping Yourself

The idea of a little bit goes a long way is a time proven method. Take that idea and apply it to Long Island, and we are talking big money. After all, Long Island as it's own state would rank 12th in population and first in population density in the United States. Even so, people are feeling the burn of having to save money. They are going out less, and spending less in stores. People are beginning to suck in their pride and use coupons which in my opinion have always been life savers.

Well now there is a website that offers 50%-70% off local Long Island businesses daily. GrubLife Metro is an easy to navigate website that offers daily coupons and Long Island lifestyle blogs.

The idea behind it is simple. Think Groupon, but for Long Island. The more people that use the site will pretty much guarantee more deals in more places all over Long Island. Signing up is as simple as giving as email. You will receive daily emails with deals inside. One you find a deal you like, we will have to purchase it.

The more people that use Grublife and participate in helping refer more people on Long Island to Grublife, the more deals at more places you shop at often will be available. Their initial deals are from well known and established North Shore businesses such as Paragon Salon, Table 9 and Basketworks with new deals coming out live on the site several times a week.

Party Until You're AWOL

Aaron Bruno’s solo project AWOLNATION is have a bash, and the party is bound to be a blast. Here's the rundown.

It's FREE. Yeah that's right, now onto the juice.

On the menu you have AWOLNATION performing at the Santos Party House, Tuesday, November 30th. There will be a guest DJ, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes. Plus Pete Suzuki and Alex English will be there and the visuals will be done by CTRL.

You've heard them on the show, now you can party with them. I just don't think Aaron Bruno’s hands will be shooting any lightning...or maybe they will...

There will be complimentary cocktails from 9-11, so get there early and get ready for a late night out. Parties 21+, ID required. You should probably RSPV. This is the place to be on that night. City doesn't sleep and neither will you.

New York Artist Making the Right Moves

Every so often when you head out to a club in the city, you will witness something rare, something beautiful.. a musical performance that blows you away. Not only do the performers look good on stage, they get the crowd (no matter how big) to move, and the sound (no matter how shitty the speaker system and mixer is) of the music is so genuine and well played that you could imagine how good it would sound being played in an arena.

Well Charlene Kaye pretty much sums that up. With the perfect amount of blues, rock, and jazz, Charlene and her band, The Brilliant Eyes, really stand out among the crowd. Every time I've seen her in concert it was a blast. Whether solo or with the band, Charlene brings everything she's got with her to the show.

Not only is she great on stage, but her media connected to the music is also totally awesome. By using a fabulous fundraising website she raised over four grand to pay for the filming of a music video. Here are the fruits of all their labor.

Charlene and the band have also bee perfoming for CMJ week right here in NYC. The first was Thursday, Oct 2, the Oven Fresh/Citizen Music Showcase @ Bar Matchless. You can still catch her tonight 7:30pm at Googie's Lounge (above the Living Room) 154 Ludlow St, NYC 21+, no cover for the Acoustic Showcase.

Not to mention if you're out in LA November 13th, check her out @ The Mint, playing a show with Darren Criss. Charlene is amazing, you should check out her tunes.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

It's CMJ Week!

Starting today until the 23rd, you'll be able to check out some of the coolest most trendy hip bands and films right here in NYC as artists from all over congregate for the CMJ Music and Film Festival.

It's always epic, featuring bands that will become the next chart toppers for sure. I mean, it's happened. U2, The Mars Volta, The Roots, KORN...they all were identified at the CMJ festival. So, it's over 1200 live performances from over 30 countries in over 75 different venues here in Brooklyn, and Downtown Manhattan. Check out the CMJ 2010 website for a full schedule.

The next 5 days are going to be packed, so make your plans, get your tickets, see the shows. ITS ON!!

Charlene Kaye and Darren Criss on Stage

I was always told to never start telling someone about anything by asking them a question first. So what do you get when you put Charlene Kaye and The Brilliant Eyes on stage with Darren Criss?

One hell of an amazing show.

Recently Stephanie Walsh (of Side B Radio) and I went to check out a show of Charlene's at the Bowery Electric in downtown Manhattan. The show was great, the room was cozy and the company was fun. We met a lot of cool people there, including some of the other artists, like Andy Lund, that performed. It was the first time Charlene had the Brilliant Eyes together for a live show, and they showed how good chemistry can look in action.

So now, you can see them AND Darren Criss, for $10. Darren Criss, singer/songwriter/actor/recently introduced intro the Glee cast...he's pretty awesome. You have to come check this out, Darren and Charlene are the perfect match for any musical taste. The scene is at the Public Assembly in Brooklyn, NY. Check it out and say hey.

There you go Sunday plans. SHOW INFO HERE.

Warper Tour 2010

Since 2004, I've been going to Vans Warped Tour in New York. That first one on Randall's Island was actually one of my first festival style concerts, and it was awesome. Since that first time seeing the amazing performances by Avenged Seven Fold, Suicide Machines, and Pepper, Warped tour has sadly progressively gotten worse. It went from hard core punks and kick-ass rockers to scene kids. Much more of 'free hugs' and the end of the wall of death.

The 2010 lineup may be the Warped Tour that brings hope to my heart, at least for the bands coming to NY. Check out the LINEUP!!

CD Release: Pete Sanchez

Today's spotlight is on Pete Sanchez, the band.

These guys give a perfect example of musical growth, paired with a distinct hard rock and roll edge. Back in 2006 they released their first EP, "Walk on the Sun", and they did it independently. Since then they've been performing in gigs all around New York, gaining the attention of local media and fan hype.

On Saturday June 19th, Pete Sanchez released their debut album Racoon Maisy. The CD release party was a huge hit, and the Wild Hog Bar and Grill, in Melville, was pumping with energy. Everyone who came down to celebrate received a free copy of the new album, but you can go and buy it from I-tunes or Amazon!

Catch them live next @ Fight The World Wrestling, Saturday July 10th at 8pm at Center Island Sports located at 101 Union Ave in Ronkonkoma NY 11779. (631-574-2214)

Sex, Rock and Roll, More Sex

I kinda didn't know what to think when I came across this one. It feels like there's always a new company coming out of nowhere creating something generic but giving it a new spin through image and advertising.

It's about damn time a company came out with a product that gives back to the consumers. I had no idea that these existed, but One Condoms are cool looking, apparently great feeling, and can be bought at Target. One Condoms is also teaming up with the Canadian rock band One for their US tour launching this fall. Here's what they do for you. You can get a free music downloads of One's album Dirty Valentine with download codes. You can either buy condoms and get the codes, or get a free one by Signing the Safer Sex Oath, filling out the short safer sex survey, joining their mailing list, or by becoming a fan on their facebook page.

Join One and One so help promote safe sex, and keep the music free!

Release Alert, Lee Ritenour's "6 String Theory"

You listen to Uncharted Waves for the latest in independent music. But, I want to remind you of where all this music stemmed from. And so does Mr. Ritenour.

Join him on June 29th. Concord Records/Monster Music will release legendary Grammy® winning guitarist Lee Ritenour’s new album 6 String Theory. The album marks Lee’s 50th year playing the guitar and to celebrate he assembled a star-studded tribute featuring 20 of the greatest guitarists of our time including George Benson, BB King, Slash, John Scofield, Vince Gill, Keb’Mo, Jonny Lang, Taj Mahal, Robert Cray and many more.

Local Talent Getting Recognized!

One of the very first bands that I reviewed live in show is now being featured on Reverbnation.com!

The guys from Borgo Pass are awesome. They play heavy music and in concert they just kick ass. I've seen them perform twice and each time they had the entire venue moving to the music, with fists flying through the air and headbangers letting their hair fly.

Congrats to Borgo Pass, go and check out their music!

General Money's Black and White Event

After having General Money come to NY for two interviews and for Band's Aide, I took Young Bobby and my lovely Jess to go see the General up in New Hampshire. After driving up from NY, and having a delicious meal at Blue Latitudes, the crew headed over to the Dover Brick House to meet up with G.

The Brick House is tucked away in a corner of downtown Dover. The base floor was the main bar, and then upstairs is where the semi-formal was going to take place. General Money was already up there setting up for the event, checking the levels for the mics and the music, blowing up balloons, and setting up the promotions table with CDs, cupcakes, and General's Blast. Around 8 o'clock the doors opened and people slowly started to trickle in. By 9pm the place was almost full and the first performer Saint D was getting ready to take the stage. Everybody was getting their drink on (who was over 21) and the new hip-hop/r&b artist performed for the first time ever, and it was apparent. He had his hand in his pocket and seemed really nervous on stage. Good for the crowd the next act coming up had a little more experience on stage.

After Saint D and a short DJ intermission, Constantino was on stage next. He did a very good job getting into his songs and trying to get the crowd moving. He even had a song with another rapping friend of his Relapse. The crowd seemed to dig it, with his songs about partying and girls. But none of these guys could really even up to General Money.

From the moment General Money took the mic, the atmosphere of the crowd changed instantly. The General was out in the crowd, interacting with everyone in the room. People got up to dance as G brought them into his performance. That's one thing General Money is awesome at, he always brings his act to the people, and it's infectious. Every person there was having a blast. General Money provided not only an awesome performance, but also cupcakes, cds of the UN, stickers, and the opportunity to win a 16 gig ipod nano!

At the event was the whole Crank Records family. The guys behind General's Blast, Team Energy, set up a showcase of General Money's energy drink line. There was also Tristen from TNM Recording Studios. Luckily for him, he won the Ipod from the giveaway, which was great because out of all the sound equipment he has, an Ipod was probably the only thing he was missing. Everyone had an amazing time, and try to prove me wrong, but I learned that people in New Hampshire are way cooler and more laid back than anyone back on the Island.

Huge props to the General for putting on another amazing performance! I can't wait until the next show!

General Money @ UVM for Benefit

The scene is the beautiful college campus of the University of Vermont. In a field of grass surrounded by new brick dorms, UVM was hosting a Relay for Life walk on April 24, 2010. This was a full day of music, socializing, and learning about cancer and those who live and have lived with it. Zack's Entertainment knew that General Money is all about charity and helping people, so he had him put on the musical bill. With 850 preregistered people, this event was expected to be huge. On the day on the event, over one thousand people showed up to give their support to the cause.

Everyone there was helping out. There were tents set up around the perimeter of the track with sororities and fraternities selling food and had carnival games to raise extra money. In the middle of the field there was the stage. There were a few musical acts of different genres, but the one that stood out the most was the General himself.

The stage opened up for General Money at about 10pm, four hours into the event. Once he hit the stage the show started and everyone was feeling the positive energy. “Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and General Money rocked the house!” said Zack from Zack Entertainment, “General Money got people singing with him and the mascot had a lot of fun!”

This comes as no surprise for anyone that has seen General Money perform. He is always getting out to his audience and pushing himself to get on everyone’s level an then bring them to his. While he was on stage, he would jump off to the track and walk with all the people, walking and rapping with them. There was even one new fan who he met walking on the track that was really digging his music. He shared the mic with her during “Get That Gwop” and she loved it.

General Money also had a tent set up for the benefit. The Crank Record team was handing out General’s Blast to give a little extra boost for the walkers and participants, some autographed albums, and a ton of stickers that almost everyone was wearing! Before and after his performance, General Money was hanging out with everyone there, busy making friends and networking. That’s just The General for you, always putting in all of his energy to whatever he is doing. “General Money had a lot of energy,” said Sarah of the UVM Relay for Life group, “His voice was giving out, but he still gave 110%”.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience for General Money. The event itself lasted twelve hours and raised over 73 thousand dollars! It was a huge success and The General couldn't be happier than to help make a difference to better people’s lives, and in this case their futures. Be sure to check out http://relayforlife.org and don’t miss the next time General Money goes on for a live performance! You will love it!
