Artist Profile: KGenious

Always on the lookout for new budding artists, I come across many different genres and types of people. Sometimes I'll find the artist or band online, maybe on a poster, or perhaps they were mentioned in another article. This time around was a little different. A friend of mine told me to check out a local reggae artist from Brooklyn, KGenius. This man is one of the most down to earth people I've ever spoken to, and it is my pleasure to welcome him onto the show on March 19th.

This is his bio:

Kirk Gammon a.k.a. KGenius was born in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica (West Indies). At the age of 2, KGenius’ mother migrated to the US leaving him with his father and older brother. Being the youngest of five children he was influenced by his sibling’s love of many different musical artists such as Bob Marley, Kenny Rogers, Third World, Maxi Priest, The Jackson 5 and Whitney Houston, which lead to his desire to write and perform music.

In his early teens KGenius traveled around Jamaica performing on hardcore dance-hall stages, developing his talents as a reggae artist and MC. Also mastering various dance styles, KGenius was impassioned by the combination of singing and dancing as an art form. The “We Are The World” album in the 1980s had a major impact on how KGenius viewed the music industry. He then realized just how much music artists could make a difference and the kind of contribution they can bring to people’s lives.

I'm Gonna Make It

At the age of 18 KGenius and his older brother migrated to the US where he was finally reunited with his mother and 3 sisters. At 19 KGenius linked up with rapper MC Eric (with international hits such as “The Beat is Technotronic”), and Manuela Kamosi a.k.a. Ya Kid K of Technotronic who recognized his talents. KGenius embarked on a Hemispheric tour with Ya Kid K across the US, Puerto Rico and Canada, as a backup dancer and opening act. KGenius is currently working on his album with Jahboyz Productions and Misha Davidson of Russboy Productions. KGenius’ unique writing style and infectious hooks will propel him to the next level. Coming from a hardcore background KGenius is ready to introduce his brand of music to a worldwide audience.

Awesome Song, Awesome Band

With all the music submissions we get, my Ipod is a fun little toy that is ever changing tunes. Occasionally there will be a song that I didn't get to really listen to in detail before it made it to the Ipod. One of those songs that just blew me away was 'Maybe Baby' by Gabriel the Marine.

Gabriel the Marine is a five piece indie rock band, hailing from right here on Long Island NY. You might have heard them before. They have been broadcasted as a feature on 92.3 Krock (RIP fm), played Bamboozle this year next to No Doubt, Taking Back Sunday and others, featured on Purevolume as a featured artists, and moved audiences all over.

The song 'Maybe Baby' rings so true; It is eerie, depressing, inspiring, and hopeful. The emotions that were brought forth were so moving, I had to play the song multiple times to sort them all out. They have a sound like none I've been fed before. The lyrics are capitivating and Michael's voice does the perfect job of capturing the emotion behind them.

The boys (Michael Desmond (Guitar, Vocals), Dylan Ebrahimian (Piano, Violin, Vocals), Robbie Hassett (Bass), Dominick D'Agostino (Guitar), and Tommy Davis (Drums)) are on tour right now with Asteria and A Love Like Pi through August and then will back in NY for a couple of shows.

With all the bands out there it's hard to find the ones you really enjoy. Gabriel the Marine it one to along with Coldplay, Dave Matthews and O.A.R.
